American Manufacturing Awards Announced at The Foundery, City Garage at Port Covington

MADE: In America is announcing the award winners of the 2016 Best Made in America and William Thornton Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship on Thursday, March 10, at a 4pm ceremony hosted by the Foundery in Baltimore.

The awards are presented for excellence in design and craftsmanship to U. S. companies in the furniture and home furnishings industry. The awards also recognize commitment to manufacturing in the United States. Representing the future of manufacturing innovation in the 21st century, the Foundery, an innovative state of the science manufacturing incubator, embodies the spirit and essence of this prestigious award.

Members of the U.S. Congress, the Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, Joshua Teitelbaum, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce at the U. S. Department of Commerce, and Foundery CEO Jason Hardebeck have been invited to participate in the announcement ceremony.

Awardees will be featured in the 2016 / All American House, taking place at downtown Baltimore’s historic Carroll Mansion which successfully competed with sites across the United States to host the event. The All American House will open on the evening of April 28, 2016 with a ticketed private event and remain open to the public through July 10, 2016.

To extend the scope and impact of the All American House city-wide, the Baltimore’s American Treasures initiative was created in cooperation with the Office of the Mayor and supported by Visit Baltimore. Significant sites throughout the city, including the Foundery, are part of an All American House affiliates network to showcase Baltimore’s national significance and influence.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake will announce the search for eligible individuals who have made significant contributions to Baltimore to be nominated for a Baltimore’s American Treasures Award. Attendees invited to the event are eligible to nominate qualified individuals for the award. Nomination materials will be on site. No nominations will be accepted in advance nor by fax, mail or email. Sponsors of Baltimore's American Treasures, the All American House 2016, and the American Treasures Culinary Experiences are eligible to nominate candidates through March 30, 2016. 

Award Criteria

Persons nominated to receive a Baltimore's American Treasures Award must be vetted by the nominator(s) and vouched to have made a singular and significant contribution to the civic life Baltimore City. The individual's contribution(s) must have a long-term impact on a significant cross section of the community and demonstrate an advancement in the quality of life in the city as a whole. Nominators must provide one or more concrete examples of a contribution(s) that has addressed these criteria in order to demonstrate the candidate's qualifications. Nominees and nomination materials will be further vetted and awardees notified at least one month prior to the awards ceremony.

Carroll Museums and MADE: In America Announce the All American House|2016

Carroll Museums and MADE: In America are creating the All American House - a national showcase of the best in American Design set against the backdrop of an iconic historic house property. Carroll Mansion located in Baltimore, MD will serve as the 2016 All American House and will be open to the public May 1 - July 10, 2016.

The All American House is bringing together student teams from the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business, The George Washington University/Corcoran School of Art + Design, Morgan State University, Stevenson University, and the Community College of Baltimore County to reinvent the interiors and grounds of Carroll Mansion and create designs that establish a new and distinctly American design aesthetic. The design competition will be juried by professionals selected by the American Society of Interior Designers.

With support from The United States Department of Commerce, Office of Textiles and Apparel and MADE:In America, the students will be able to furnish their rooms with products from leading American manufacturers with a special emphasis on Maryland based companies. These companies have been chosen for their superior products and commitment to manufacturing their goods in the United States.

Renowned American designer Alexa Hampton is the Chair of the Honorary Steering Committee that consists of members of the Maryland delegation to the US Congress, members of the Maryland General Assembly, leading business executives and nonprofit leaders. Noted architects, designers, artists and curators also serve as special advisers and mentors.
